A Teaser

Here’s the situation: After a lot of searching, I have found that piece of information I really need. But it’s on a website written in a language that I don’t speak. I don’t need a perfect translation; I just need to get the gist of it.

Of course, there are free translation web-apps like BabelFish or the beta Google Translate. But by the time I’ve found the translation service, gone back to the first web page, copied the paragraph from there, gone back to the second web page, and pasted it in, I’ve already forgotten what it was that I wanted to know.

I’m lazy. I’m impatient. I want it now! And when my friend is chatting to me online and trots out their French, I want to be able to impress them by immediately knowing what they said and how to respond.

Actually, it annoys me every time I have to take my mind off what I’m doing and have to go somewhere else in order to do something. I want to bring everything to me. So really, I want everything to be an Enso command.

Well, we don’t have “everything” yet, but we’ve been working on something big. How big? How does thirty-three new commands sound? How about thirty-three new commands for the cost of zero?

Check back soon to find out what they are.

I think my most anticipated command would be an extension of calculate that takes note of the equals sign.

“3+3″ becomes “6″ but “3+3=” becomes “3+3=6″.

Would save me a lot of cutting and pasting.

Yes i remember thinking the same thing too when i was reading the humane interface!

To ICR: The Calculate command should work that way right now, as far as I know. Please give it another try, and if it still doesn’t work the way you expect, please submit a bug report. Thanks!

Can’t wait for the new commands !!

33 commands? This will be worse than waiting for the next annual SI swimsuit issue… or the next DefCon!

I saw an update message last night and I got excited, but I don’t think that was it. I’m looking forward to the new commands!

How about a preview of what these commands will be?

For example, if the new commands will become available in 33 days - why not announce 1 new command each day?

This will certainly keep some people coming back to your site everyday….

I was going to say, “I hope there is a show desktop command!” But, in the middle of typing it I realized, “I could probably make it an open command.” It totally worked and I’m totally excited. Typing open first is a little annoying though. Good bye forever you stupid quicklaunch toolbar.

If you want to translate webpages, just go to
http://www.systranbox.com/systran/box
and copy the URL in the edit box (Web page). Works great and you can get it translated from a lot of languages.

I would say that translation is at the bottom of my list. Of all the things that people do on their computers everyday, translation is one of the least frequent ones. Sure, it’s a cool feature, but I would want to see more practical features. Is there a way to combine “Open with” and “Learn As”? That would be helpful.
I hope you guys are doing some research about which commands are most important to users. Also, look at your competitors (Launchy, Skylight, etc) and Quick Silver.

“… copy the URL in the edit box (Web page)”
I hate copying and pasting. I’d rather just run a translate command on whats there instead of having to move everything all around. ~30s to open the translate webpage, copy the link from the other page, paste it into the webpage and wait for that new page to load.

Looks like my message got cut off because I used a less then sign! (I assume it thought it was an unclosed HTML tag)

The rest said:

“‘less then’ 3s to quasimode a translate command. I don’t know about anyone else but I’m glad to have those 27s back.”

Alex: It’s going to be a lot less than 33 days.

Justin: Thanks for sharing that tip about learning the desktop as an open command!

In the matter of the copy/paste/translation issue: there will always remain toolbars, like the one from Systran. Just press the button and it translates. Of course, toolbars can be pretty annoying and place consuming as well.

Wow I’m exited for this!
keep up the good work Humanized!!

I’ve contact Humanized about this sometime ago:

How about a ‘talk’ or ‘chat’ command that let’s me type of the name of my IM contact who I’d like to talk to.

Sometimes an idea just pops up in my head that i’d like to tell someone about it. I want to be able to tell the computer just that: get me this guy coz I have something to say :)

I have a design remark…
I have use a lot of command line launcher softs and almost all of them have an option to appear at the center of the screen (Google desktop included).

The text in Enso is at the FAR LEFT and NOT CUSTOMIZABLE…
We have to look over there quickly and often and it is tiresome… same problem than toolbars, at the difference that you peek at them slowly.

Well, it would be faster to have the display right in front. Even if it would no be as command-line nostalgic as the present design.

Whatever good design looks, if it interferes it is not.

By the way, I suppose you already know rikai.com, and maybe your future translation feature would be inspired by it. But I’d like to point that there is a software that does exactly the same thing for almost EVERY text displayed on screen :
stardict.
May be of interest…

jono, lot less than 33 days… it’s already been 15 days :(
